So I’m driving home from the movies, and I’m listening to “The X”, which is sort of an alternative rock station… I think it’s national, so many of you may know it, but anyways… it’s the whole “new music” thing going on. I usually listen to the classical music station, but they had opera on, and in my opinion listening to opera on the radio is like reading about a blowjob.
So I’m listening to all of this new music, and they play a song by a band called Gub, or Gup or Glub, or something like that — they’re a Canadian punk band. Yes, Canadian punk. Anyways, it gets weirder. The song wasn’t too bad. It gets even weirder than that. After the song was over, the DJ came on to let us know that Gub or Glupp or whatever will be playing here in Pittsburgh next month — they’ll be opening for Avril Lavinge.
Now I knew punk has been on the ropes lately, but I didn’t know things were that bad. I think we should all say a prayer to the ghost of Iggy Pop tonight.

My friend was just bitching about this….
“Punk’s not dead, but it deserves to die when it becomes another stale cartoon.”
I figure it’s like this. There will be yet another wave of corporate shit that calls itself punk and adopts some of the outward signs and trappings. Some people will think this is cool and will get into it, and some of them will seek out more punk, finding real punk. They’ll like the ideas and the feel, and they’ll become the cool people they had the potential to be all along, bringing more ideas and perspectives to the scene and to the world as a whole.
I figure that’s worth putting up with the twits at the shows for.
On the other hand, Green Day went out of their way again and again to say how cool the Circle Jerks were, and I’ve met damn few people who know who the Circle Jerks are. So maybe the cool people won’t be out in force. Damn this lack of precognition.
Listening to the radio? Does that mean you have managed to get one fitted, or do you have a range of portables that share the front passenger seat?
The car came with a receiver and a tape deck — I’m trying to get an MP3 player installed. Radio is the fallback.
Yes, and Rancid spent enough time extolling the virtues of the Ramones. That didn’t really temper my opinion.
