Let them smile, as I do now,

Yay, I got a microwave.

My place of employment recently (a few months ago, at least) moved offices. In the old office, there had not been a microwave, and so one of the employees bought one and put it in the kitchen there. The new office had a microwave built-in, and so when he brought his microwave from the old office to the new office, there was no place to put it. So he put it on his desk. And there it sat. For months.

It wasn’t plugged in or anything, and he didn’t use it to like heat up TV dinners while he was working or anything. It just sat there, unused. So today I offered him $20 for it. And he said yes. :) (Actually first I offered him $10, and he said no.) So now I have a microwave. It’s actually kind of gigantic. I may have to get a place for it to sit on, because it’s overly dominating my counter right now. But, it seems to work, and it has a clock on it and everything. It’s all very exciting.

Of course the main problem is that I don’t have any food that you can microwave. And since I’ve been without a microwave oven for something like 3 years now, I don’t even really remember what there is to microwave. In fact, even though I’ve been really wanting one for quite a while, now that I have one, I don’t have the slightest idea what to do with it. I’m going to be stopping by the grocery store tomorrow, so does anybody have any suggestions? Right now the only thing I can think of are hot dogs, and somebody has suggested “Hot Pockets” although I don’t know what that is. Suggestions welcome.

  1. I mostly use the microwave for heating up leftovers and defrosting stuff. Hot Pockets are tasty, though.

  2. Baked potatoes. Melting cheese on toast. Making sauces. Heating up anything that comes in a can and should be heated. Omlettes. Scrambled eggs. Lotsa stuff.

  3. 1. The “Tasty-Bite” brand of prepared Indian food entrees is really really good.

    2. Potatoes are pretty good microwaved.

    3. Likewise for frozen vegetables of any kind.

  4. You make omelettes in a microwave? *looks horrified*
I don’t like microwaved potatos, but if you microwave them for 5 minutes before you bake them then they only need half an hour in the oven to get nice and soft.

I use ours for defrosting things.

  5. Since omlettes turn out light and fluffy in <2 minutes, without needing to turn, and risk getting transformed into scrambled eggs, you bet I cook them in the microwave. I *prefer* oven baked potatoes, sure, but I find it an apalling waste of energy to heat the oven unless I’m going to fill it.

I tend to defrost things the old fashioned way, although I do use the microwave if I’ve forgotten.

  6. bacon. Saves a lot lot of mess compared to grilling. yeah, and reheating leftovers and defrosting.

  7. Hrm hrm… well, I cut potatoes up and put a little water in and then cook them in the microwave when I want to make potato salad. Also sometimes I’ll cook an egg in it, but make sure you POKE THE YOLK and do it on medium, or you end up with a rubber joke egg. And oil the bowl you cook the egg in or it will never come out. Tasty Bites are good, like iggy said. Um um. You can microwave beans, but make sure you put saran wrap on them, because sometimes the ones with skins still on will blow up. =)

Mostly I use it to heat up stuff. You might want to make a chili or something and freeze the leftovers, and then just heat them up in the microwave.

  8. go to store. steer yourself towards the freezer. find tasty frozen indian food things. microwave and enjoy. also you can use it to cook potatoes. and popcorn. and to warm things up – but not bread! also to melt butter and pour over other things like vegetables. invest in a microwave cookbook.
